Even though you do not have control over the abuser’s violence, you do have a choice about how to respond to it. Whether or not you decide to get a restraining order, report the abuse to the police or break up with abuser without using the legal system, a safety plan is one of the most effective tools that you can use to prevent future harm or abuse from the abuser. A safety plan is just as important if you decide to stay in the relationship. Through safety planning, you can think ahead about how to protect your own safety, instead of having to figure it out later when you may be in danger.
The safety plan should be practical and specific. It can help you try to avoid dangerous situations and think of ways to react when you are in immediate danger.
- What should I do if I am still in the relationship?
- What should I do if I am leaving the relationship and/or the relationship is over?
- What should I take with me if I have to leave home quickly?
