JOB SUMMARY
The Staff Attorney will carry out the law-based education and outreach services and legal services provided by Break the Cycle. The attorney must be a creative advocate who can work equally well with “at-risk” youth, community leaders, social service providers and volunteers. The Staff Attorney reports directly to the Associate Director and supervises volunteers and interns.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching “Ending Violence” and conducting other education and outreach to youth and adults
- Interviewing and representing clients in domestic violence-related court proceedings
- Providing advice, counsel and/or referral services over the telephone to callers
- Conducting training and ongoing supervision of volunteer attorneys, law students and other volunteers
- Assisting with program data tracking and evaluation
- Community building and forging and managing collaborations with schools, youth groups and service providers
- Developing materials for volunteers, clients and the community at large
- Legal research and writing
- Other various duties as assigned by the Associate Director
QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary: - Licensed attorney in California
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
- California driver’s license and a car
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and supervision skills
- Legal research and writing skills
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people
- Patience
Preferred:
- Background working with youth in crisis
- Experience with program evaluation and development
- Experience working in nonprofit settings
