Breaking News - Thanksgiving, 2006
We here at Break the Cycle have a lot to be thankful for. As our programs continue to grow, so has the number of wonderful supporters and advocates for young people that help make Break the Cycle's efforts a success.
This year Break the Cycle is especially thankful for the generosity and support of nearly 200 volunteers and interns who have helped with everything from community outreach to administrative support, and from pro bono legal assistance to fundraising.
Each one of our volunteers brings his or her personal passion, commitment and reason for joining us. Recently, we conducted a survey where volunteers had the opportunity to share why they dedicate their time and talents to Break the Cycle. Here is some of what they had to say:
"I feel very strongly that the cycle of abuse can be stopped before it starts...by speaking to young people."
"I wanted to better serve the community and Break the Cycle is a very important organization dedicated to helping youth break free from domestic violence."
"I really believe in reaching out to young adults. BTC has found a great way to address domestic violence in the community... they give young victims a safe place to find assistance to begin to live lives free of fear."
We look forward to continuing to engage volunteers in new and rewarding ways. We're enhancing opportunities for volunteers to participate outside of business hours and regardless of geographic location. I invite all of you to contact us at [email protected] to learn how you can get involved.

This winter, Break the Cycle is launching a bi-coastal Latino public education campaign. We will create a broad-based outreach and education campaign for the prevention of domestic violence among Latino youth living in the County of Los Angeles and the District of Columbia.
In Los Angeles County Latinos represent 60% of the under-18 population and in Washington, DC Latinos represent 25% of the under-18 population. Latino youth face additional hurdles in accessing domestic violence services such as:
- limited English proficiency
- cultural barriers
- fear of law enforcement and deportation
Through this campaign, Break the Cycle hopes to educate and motivate Latino youth to better understand the domestic violence resources available within their communities and to take action to prevent the onset of abusive relationships.
We will partner with organizations such as El Nido in Los Angeles, CA and La Clinica del Pueblo in Washington, D.C. among others. These organizations will advise us in the education campaign and will help us distribute campaign materials to the youth they serve. Collaborations such as these always help us to better engage the community in our efforts against teen dating violence.
