Weâre proud to announce that Olympic gold medalist and reigning national womenâs gymnastics champion Jordyn Wieber has joined Mary Kay to promote loveisrespect and the text-for-help service provided by the National Dating Abuse Helpline!
Loveisrespect launched the nationâs first text helpline in September, 2011. In fact, Vice President Joseph Biden sent the very first text! Mary Kay, Inc. recently provided a generous $1 million donation to fund and promote this service throughout the United States. Mary Kay also served as the primary funder for Break the Cycleâs prevention curriculum, [Ending Violence] in 2009.
Jordyn Wieber decided to support Mary Kayâs âDonât Look Awayâ campaign and loveisrespect because of the alarming rates of dating abuse. âAfter learning about the warning signs and shocking statistics of teen dating abuse, it is clear this kind of program is needed,â said Jordyn Wieber. âThe thought of my family, friends, teammates or fans becoming part of these statistics terrifies me. That alone motivates me to share the warning signs and the text-for-help program with as many people as possible. Just like gymnastics, balance and boundaries are critical to healthy dating relationships.â
By simply texting âloveisâ to 22522, teens and young adults are connected safely and anonymously to trained peer advocates who provide support, safety tips and referrals. The texting service is an amazing new option for teens to get help discretely and confidentially for themselves, a friend or someone they love.
Weâd like to thank Jordyn Wieber and Mary Kay for their support of our efforts. We look forward to making sure every young person believes a healthy relationship can be a part of their routine!
