Internships at Break the Cycle

Break the Cycle offers a variety of internship and other opportunities for high school, undergraduate and law students. All of Break the Cycle’s internships are unpaid positions, although we are happy to assist interns in receiving class credit or to support their application for funding where applicable.

Internships for high school students:

High school interns. Break the Cycle’s high school interns provide administrative assistance in support of all of Break the Cycle’s work. Interns also have the opportunity to observe classroom presentations and conduct outreach in the community, including participation in our Youth Voices program.

This opportunity is available year-round.

Internships for undergraduate students:

Student Liaisons. Break the Cycle’s Student Liaisons are on-campus leaders in the movement to end domestic violence by working within the college community. Liaisons coordinate outreach and education opportunities on campus and build relationships between Break the Cycle and individuals and organizations on campus that share an interest in this very important issue. Student Liaisons are expected to devote at least six hours per week to their internship.

This opportunity is available during the regular school year (September-May). The duration of this internship varies depending on the calendar of the intern’s school.


Position requires:

  • Current enrollment at a local college or university.

Summer undergraduate interns. Each summer Break the Cycle accepts undergraduate students into our ten-week, full-time, internship program. Interns have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of public interest work and experiences. The primary responsibility is to assist in the planning and production of our annual fundraising event, held in July, through donation solicitation, ticket sales and other related tasks. Interns are also encouraged to participate in research and outreach projects related to Break the Cycle’s programs. Please be aware that our undergraduate interns have little to no direct contact with our clients.

Internships for law students:

Summer law interns. Each summer Break the Cycle accepts law students into our ten-week, full-time, internship program. Law student interns have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of legal work and experiences. Interns perform traditional legal research and writing on various domestic violence, family, criminal and general public interest law issues. The research conducted is on issues which affect the lives and safety of the youth that Break the Cycle serves. Interns also work with Break the Cycle attorneys to do client intake and court accompaniment and co-teach Ending Violence: A Curriculum for Educating Teens on Domestic Violence and the Law and conduct various other forms of outreach. (Full- and part-time law internships are often available during the school year as well.)

Internships for both undergraduate and graduate students:

Development interns. Break the Cycle’s part-time development interns provide a wide range of assistance to our fundraising staff. Primary responsibilities include updating our organization’s database of supporters, grant research, and planning of fundraising events. Specific duties may vary depending on experience and interests of the individual intern. Interns are expected to devote at least six hours per week to their internship.

This position is available during the regular school year (September-May). The duration of this internship varies depending on the calendar of the intern’s school.

Program interns. Break the Cycle’s part-time program interns provide a wide-range of assistance to our program services staff. Past projects have included researching social services that our clients may need, updating database records, and conducting outreach in the community. However, please be aware that these interns have little to no direct contact with our clients.

This position is available during the regular school year (September-May). The duration of this internship varies depending on the calendar of the intern’s school.

Nonprofit management interns. Break the Cycle’s nonprofit management interns provide a wide range of assistance to our managerial staff. Projects include researching issues related to program management and growth, human resources and personnel, the development of organizational policies and procedures, and other administrative support as necessary. Interns are expected to devote at least six hours per week to their internship.

This position is available during the regular school year-round. The duration of this internship varies depending on the calendar of the intern’s school.
