Break the Cycle – Job Opportunities

JOB SUMMARY

The Staff Attorney will carry out the law-based education and outreach services and legal services provided by Break the Cycle. The attorney must be a creative advocate who can work equally well with “at-risk” youth, community leaders, social service providers and volunteers. The Staff Attorney reports directly to the Associate Director and supervises volunteers and interns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching “Ending Violence” and conducting other education and outreach to youth and adults
  • Interviewing and representing clients in domestic violence-related court proceedings
  • Providing advice, counsel and/or referral services over the telephone to callers
  • Conducting training and ongoing supervision of volunteer attorneys, law students and other volunteers
  • Assisting with program data tracking and evaluation
  • Community building and forging and managing collaborations with schools, youth groups and service providers
  • Developing materials for volunteers, clients and the community at large
  • Legal research and writing
  • Other various duties as assigned by the Associate Director

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Necessary:

  • Licensed attorney in California
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • California driver’s license and a car
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and supervision skills
  • Legal research and writing skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Patience

    Preferred:

  • Background working with youth in crisis
  • Experience with program evaluation and development
  • Experience working in nonprofit settings
