“Let Your Heart Rule” – Break the Cycle and Verizon Partner to Raise Awareness on Teen Dating Abuse

Campaign Encourages Los Angeles Teens to Take Leadership in February’s National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month

Los Angeles, California – Break the Cycle, the leading voice for teens on the issue of dating violence, and Verizon are asking high schoolers across Los Angeles County this month to “Let Your Heart Rule,” and take a heartfelt stand to increase awareness on teen dating violence. Since its launch in 2011, the Let Your Heart Rule campaign has promoted healthy relationships to over one million middle and high school students across the nation.

“One in three teens will experience abuse in a dating relationship and more than two-thirds of them will never report it to anyone,” said Marjorie Gilberg, executive director of Break the Cycle. “We’re honored to partner with Verizon to help empower and educate teens on this very important topic and help put a stop to the cycle of teen dating violence.”

Break the Cycle and Verizon will impact the lives of 150,000 high school students across the Los Angeles region, through the distribution of campaign resource kits to 150 local area high schools and service providers. Additionally, Break the Cycle and Verizon are launching the 2012 “Let Your Heart Rule” public service announcement (PSA) competition for Los Angeles County high school students to create an educational spot on teen dating violence prevention. The previous year’s winner was featured on the DR PHIL show. This year’s winners will receive the opportunity to be featured, along with their school, in the final professional-quality version of their PSA.
