October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

Today marks the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved out of Day of Unity which was first observed in October, 1981 organized by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Day of Unity is observed the first Monday in October, celebrating the strength of survivors.

Today volunteers, interns and staff in Break the Cycle’s DC office participated in “paint the town purple,” where they shared resources, information and purple buttons to engage the community in preventing domestic violence. The theme for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in DC this year is “spread the love,” and that’s exactly what we did!

How will you celebrate Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Email info@breakthecycle.org, Facebook message or tweet us to show us how YOU will spread the love, and awareness of domestic and dating violence this month!
